HAPPY Reading Camps, Central

Creator and director of non-profit summer camps designed to

promote and improve literacy attitudes and outcomes for learners

in preschool through middle school.  Weekly camps vary

by theme, but all include daily fluency, word study,

comprehension, writing and content-area enrichment.

HAPPY Reading Website,

Publisher, writer and curriculum designer for innovative website

that provides literacy-supporting content for educators, parents,

counselors, librarians, and community leaders to use with literacy

learners.  Articles and profiles highlight best practices in literacy

instruction.  Instructional materials are leveled and aligned with

word study, cross-curricular content and standards.  Support

is also provided for bibliotherapy and parent involvement.

HAPPY Educational Services,

Provider of literacy education services, including training

for parents and other educators as well as customized

assessment and tutoring for students of all ages.  Creator of

both digital and off-line, innovative learning materials.

Approved Department of Education provider of Supplemental

Educational Services in Reading for elementary students in

public schools throughout the state.

2011-Present, though Virginia waived out of SES in 2012

Hanover Tavern, Hanover, VA

Served as primary researcher, writer, creator, and

coordinator of educational field trip experience for

4th and 6th grade students, aligned with their grade-

level Standards of Learning (SOL) and focused on literacy.

Youth Empowerment Services, Richmond, VA

Creator of bibliotherapy program.  Trained staff and

supplied books and lessons to assist summer counselors

with clients addressing mental and emotional health issues.

Hilliard House and Flagler Home, Henrico, VA

Creator and coordinator of capacity-building literacy services for homeless

mothers and their children (ages 1-18) as they transition to greater self-sufficiency.  Conducted weekly read-alouds with the children, focusing on character and literacy growth.  Also held literacy training sessions with the parents, assisting them in being more effective first teachers and tutors for their

own children. Provided regular assessment and customized or age-appropriate lessons for each child and assisted them in owning books and developing a love for reading.

Intensive, ongoing program with adult learners in

the Even Start Program, specializing in motivation

and specific strategies for parents to assist their pre-school children with

literacy and life skills.

Primary advisor and coordinator of the faith-based initiative,

Creator of family literacy workshop program for adult education,

WCVE-TV, Richmond, VA

Literacy trainer for Ready to Learn initiative.  Using national

PBS/DOE guidelines, create workshops for parents, educators

and others; sessions emphasize importance of early literacy

development as well as skills and strategies to help children

learn and succeed.

HAPPY Reading Programs, Richmond, VA

Creator, and coordinator of innovative literacy motivation, parent and community involvement program for schools; emphasis on community partnerships and research-based best practices to support academic success.  Select content-related children’s literature and prepare mini-lessons for volunteers, promoting higher level thinking skills.  Coordinate hundreds of volunteers, including their training and scheduling.  Foster a love for literacy and inspire families to spend more time with books.  Initially piloted by Virginia Governor Mark Warner’s PASS initiative.

Reading Ambassador, Greater Richmond, VA

Acted as an advisor, spokesperson and program coordinator

for literacy outreach initiative begun in conjunction with the

Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce and various

non-profit partner organizations.   The 3R Campaign promoted

literacy for children and families in the metropolitan area.
